DER ZAMMER LOCHPUTZ

A long time ago the sun rose upon the Krahberg eastward. A smith was washing his tools in the river nearby. Here suddenly the smith saw in front of him a nymph. He, won sweetly at first sight, took her into his home and brought up her as a one’s daughter. The boys in the village heard of the mysterious girl that livedat master smith’ home. So a young herdsman knew her too and he was very attracted by her.

In summer the herdsman went to the smith’ house and here won the girl’s hearth and asked her hand in marriage. The smith didn’t like this fact and entrusted him to do three tasks. The first was: if he had made the water that flowed near the smith’ home become white, he would have performed the task.In the same day the herdsman went up to the pasture, milked all the cows and spilt the milk into the river Zammer Lochbach. Next morning he stood up early and went to the smith’ home, where nearly flowed the water, become white by milk. The nymph sang for the happiness, while the smith got irritated for the performance of the job. The smith assigned the second tasks: if he had built a cave with silver slabs where he could see his own heart, he would have obtained his daughter.

For weeks he tried to solve the puzzle. During a morning he found the solution: he remembered that he had seen on a silver saddle, glass slabs. For days he picked up them and built a cave with them.Shortly after thiswas already. The boy ledthe smith into the cave and invite him to see into the glass slabs. The smith, hesitant, looked inside. Suddenly he realized his heart hardness and avidity. Full of fright he ran out of the cave and assigned the third task:if the herdsman had made the stars have a wash in the water fall, he would have married the nymph. The shepherd sat all the night by the waterfall to think. He played a song with a flute.

Slowly the stars arrived in the waterfall. The day after the fall was frozen. Unwillingly the smith praised the herdsman when this showed him the waterfall. Slowly came the winter and the animals stayedin the cowshed. When came the spring the shepherd threw himself to the smith house to reclaim the smith word. But this sat a trap to the herdsman. When he took the first step forward on the bridge, this broke down and the shepherd fell down too. During the fall he changed into a bull. All the animals screamed aloud and the forge caught fire. The nymph changed into stone. Today in the Zammer Lochputz, where there’s the waterfall, you can find the bull’s headand the nimph of stone.
